What the cerin is ?
Since 1 January 2011, all diesel cars put on the road in the European Union must be equipped with a diesel particulate filter. This device collects the fine particles emitted by the exhaust gases in order to burn them out, regularly performing regeneration cycles. However, within the former PSA group, a somewhat special system has been developed. This requires the use of an additive called cerine. Let's briefly review the role played by this additive.
How does the regeneration of a diesel particulate filter take place ? Why use a DPF additive ?
There are several methods of maintaining a diesel particulate filter, on a diesel engine vehicle. As mentioned earlier, there is of course the regeneration cycle. This is the ideal method to use when possible. It is also possible to regularly carry out a descaling. This is especially important for those who drive a lot in the city. But for Peugeot and Citroën, the choice was made to use an additive. This is a tank that contains the additive. This is an acid mixture which is injected directly into the tank, via a computer. This additive then allows the combustion temperature to be lowered to around 450°. In practice, this means that the DPFS can be regenerated more frequently and even more quickly. Cerin is the name of the diesel particulate filter additive for Peugeot and Citroën diesel engines.

How cerin works ?
Cerin takes the form of a flexible bag that must be placed on the vehicle. The computer built into your vehicle will then regularly take out cerin in order to inject it directly into the engine, automatically choosing the right density. Cerin is therefore an acid composed of cerium dioxide and various solvents. It is therefore an integral part of the proper functioning of the engine. It must always be operational, otherwise the vehicle may not start. When the ceria bag is almost empty, a warning light indicates that a quick refill is required. It should also be noted that the type of use has a direct impact on how quickly the bag is emptied. Those who fill up their cars with diesel fuel can generally expect a longer service life for the cerin bag, which can then last up to 100,000 kilometres. Those who regularly fill up their cars and drive in the city can then divide this value by almost three! Cerine is generally sold in five-litre containers. On recent models, it takes the form of a flexible bag. On older models, it is a canister that must be filled. In addition, it is strongly recommended that you choose an additive that is suitable for your car model. Not all the references on the market are necessarily miscible. If in doubt, ask your dealer or garage for advice.
Is it possible to drive without cerin ?
When the warning light for the particulate filter additive appears, you usually have 500 km to go. With a little effort, you can even fill up two to three times. After a while, your car may decide to stop by itself to avoid damaging the engine. Cerin is an additive that is necessary for the particle filter to function properly. By extension, without cerin, the engine may gradually choke. Performance can drop, consumption will increase and the particle filter will inevitably clog. It is therefore essential to ensure that the level of cerin is sufficient. On some models, notably the C4 Picasso, it has been quite common for the level sensor to be inoperable, which then regularly requires the cerin to be topped up when it is not necessarily necessary. This may involve replacing the additive tank or even updating the ECU. When in doubt, always refer to a professional for diagnosis.
The problem is not just a matter of the fuel tank.
What you need to know about cerin
In order to reduce pollution from diesel engines, various solutions have been considered. The particulate filter is an effective and rather reliable means of removing a large proportion of the fine particles. Regeneration cycles are essential for the proper functioning of these devices. Cerin may seem restrictive, but it is truly effective. Lowering the cremation temperature of the fine particles increases the frequency of the cycles and reduces their duration. So you have everything to gain! However, you should also be aware that this is a sensitive piece of equipment that needs to be maintained and serviced regularly to work properly. Replacing a ceria bag or refilling the level is not very complicated, but it is essential to be equipped and protected. As with any acid, it is necessary to avoid contact with the skin. And even though cerin may seem restrictive to use, it is quickly forgotten. But for this to happen, you need to use your diesel vehicle properly. This means avoiding urban areas and regularly making long journeys. This is the guarantee of a healthy diesel vehicle that will pollute less durably and make its anti-pollution peripherals last.
