All about the DPF with integrated catalytic converter in one piece: easy installation and optimum performance
On most modern cars there are two well-known pollution control devices: the catalytic converter and the diesel particulate filter. When one of them breaks down, it is necessary to replace it. However, did you know that there is a particularly interesting alternative, which combines both the catalytic converter and the DPF ? Better still, this solution has nothing but advantages for you, as a professional, and for your customers. Here's everything you need to know about the diesel particulate filter combined with the catalytic converter.
The rise of the DPF with monoblock catalytic converter
In order to reduce the environmental impact of the automobile, it was decided to improve the efficiency of our cars. This involves controlling the pollutants emitted by the engine. In this respect, two types of equipment coexist. Firstly, there is the catalytic converter, which was introduced in 1993 on petrol cars and a few years later on diesel cars. The diesel particulate filter is designed to eliminate fine particles by burning them. These two devices are therefore complementary, especially as they have the same needs. In particular, to function effectively, they require a high temperature. This is particularly true of the diesel particulate filter, which starts its regeneration cycles at 550°C. The diesel engines of the former PSA entity managed to lower the threshold to 450° C thanks to the use of cerin, a well-known additive.
Including the catalytic converter and diesel particulate filter in a single steel body offers only advantages, both in terms of installation, and cost. Among the references in the segment are the KF-8811, a best-seller that seduces with its unbeatable quality/price ratio, and the KF-0921, intended for Renault Master 2.3 dCi. However, despite a very real interest, the FAP combined in monobloc with the catalytic converter still remains unknown to many professionals...
Quick and easy assembly
The main advantage of the one-piece diesel particulate filter with catalytic converter is its ease of installation. Instead of having two devices on the exhaust line, there is only one. The installation is even easier and quicker. There is no particular difficulty in carrying out the operation. An assembly kit is also supplied. It should be noted that DPF with integrated catalytic converters are available for the entire vehicle fleet. Among the most popular references are the KF-8811 model for the Peugeot 3008 with a 1.6 BlueHDi diesel engine with 100, 115 or 120 horsepower and the KF-0921 model for the Renault Master Diesel.
Because everything is included in the same structure, you will save disassembly time: you only need to remove the original diesel particulate filter and the catalytic converter and then replace the whole assembly with the monoblock, which relies on the original fixings. In addition to this, there is no longer the risk of losing the seal between the DPF and the catalytic converter, which is a regular source of return visits for your customers. You therefore have everything to gain by opting for this solution. Of course, a question arises: how do you convince your customers to choose the monobloc when the replacement initially only concerns the DPF and not necessarily the catalytic converter ?
Catalytic converters: often a necessary replacement
Between replacing a DPF alone (model KF-2511) and a complete monobloc (KF-8811), the price difference is really measured. It's all about safety. When a diesel particulate filter no longer fulfils its primary function, there is always the risk that the catalytic converter, located upstream and closer to the engine, has also suffered from potential overheating. This reduces the performance of the catalytic converter, which in turn can reduce the performance of the new diesel particulate filter. Opting for a DPF with an integrated catalytic converter is therefore a real safety feature for the motorist. The absence of leakage is an undeniable advantage, as is the general increase in temperature of the system. This facilitates the recurrence of regeneration cycles and therefore optimises the overall operation of the system.
Since the two elements have been moulded together, you will have no constraints in the assembly, regardless of your will. This avoids customer returns to the workshop while allowing better durability for the vehicles that benefit from it.
The benefits of the DPF block with integrated catalytic converter
- Increased efficiency: using a monobloc combining the diesel particulate filter and catalytic converter allows a high temperature to be reached more quickly. This allows the DPF to initiate regeneration cycles more quickly and thus avoid any risk of clogging. In a monobloc, the DPF is located just after the catalytic converter, in the same cylinder on the exhaust line;
- Lower cost: by combining the diesel particulate filter and catalytic converter in one body, the purchase price is lower. It also makes the exhaust line lighter and therefore less wearable. The purchase price of a monoblock is generally lower than buying the two pieces of equipment separately. It also reduces the cost of labour;
- Important life span: what wears out a catalytic converter and a diesel particulate filter prematurely are repeated short urban trips. These do not allow sufficient temperature to be reached to carry out the chemical transformations and regeneration cycles. Combining the DPF and the catalytic converter in a single unit increases their joint efficiency. By reducing the risk of clogging, the monobloc is therefore likely to have a longer service life;
- Perfect compatibility: since they were built at the same time, with parts of the same quality and their compatibility is maximum, the DPF + catalytic converter monoblocks are very efficient. The risk of air or pollutant leakage between the two pieces of equipment is therefore very small.
An ideal solution for a majority of vehicles
Proposing a diesel particulate filter with catalytic converter to your customers is the real deal ! If your customers have a diesel car, compatible with a monobloc DPF, with integrated catalytic converter, it is better to choose this solution. It will allow easy installation without having to worry about painful leakage and technical installation. For your customers, it is the assurance of having an anti-pollution device that is both efficient and durable. Those who drive mostly in the city will be able to trigger regeneration cycles more easily, which will increase the life of the unit.
On Krosfou, you will discover a wide selection of diesel particulate filters with integrated catalytic converter, for all models of cars with diesel engines.
