It was the result of an agreement between the Soviet state and the Italian company Fiat to build a factory and train workers in car production. The company then set out to tackle the Western European market and adopted the more easily remembered and pronounced Lada name. The brand struck a blow in 1976 with the Lada Niva, the only real 4-wheel drive, robust and inexpensive 4X4 of its time. Privatised in 1992 and then renationalised when Vladimir Putin came to power, Lada has not been distributed in France since 2017 due to insufficient sales.
